NAF Secures Global Combat Medical Accreditation, Boosts Battlefield Survival Capacity
In modern warfare, saving lives on the battlefield is as critical as winning the fight. The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has taken a major step towards strengthening its combat medical response with an international accreditation that places it among a select group of military medical training institutions in West Africa.
The NAF, in collaboration with the German Technical Advisory Group (GTAG), has secured accreditation for its Air Mobile First Aid Unit (AMFAU) at the Nigerian Air Force School of Medical Sciences and Aviation Medicine (NAFSMSAM), Kaduna, by the United States-based National Association of Emergency Medical Technicians (NAEMT).
The milestone followed the successful conduct of Nigeria’s first-ever NAEMT-accredited Tactical Combat Casualty Care (TCCC) training programme, held from 13 to 28 May 2026.
The internationally recognised TCCC programme equips military personnel with lifesaving skills such as haemorrhage control, airway management, trauma stabilisation and casualty evacuation under hostile conditions, helping to improve survival rates during combat operations.
Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal Sunday Kelvin Aneke, described the accreditation as a strategic advancement in the NAF’s pursuit of operational excellence.
He said the enhanced medical capability would strengthen operational readiness, improve survival outcomes and reinforce the welfare of personnel engaged in counter-insurgency and counter-terrorism operations across the country.
The accreditation was formally activated during a graduation ceremony where the NAEMT banner was presented to the Commandant of NAFSMSAM, Air Vice Marshal AC Ekpe, while successful participants received internationally recognised certificates and course insignia.
AVM Ekpe hailed the achievement as the beginning of a new chapter in combat medical training within the Nigerian Air Force, stressing that the ultimate value of emergency medical care lies not in certificates earned but in lives saved.
The development further underscores the NAF’s commitment to adopting global best practices while building a highly skilled and mission-ready force capable of supporting military operations and humanitarian emergencies.
