A stronger health system is often measured not by the number of hospitals built, but by how quickly lifesaving care reaches those who need it most.

In a major push to improve healthcare access and emergency response, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has commissioned critical health infrastructure projects nationwide and launched 145 tricycle ambulances to serve communities across Nigeria.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Friday unveiled a series of healthcare projects across Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones, marking the third anniversary of his administration with renewed commitments to universal health coverage and improved healthcare delivery.

The projects span primary, secondary and tertiary healthcare facilities and include Emergency Operations Centres in Kano, Sokoto and Katsina states, the Lagos Vaccine Hub, primary healthcare infrastructure in Delta State, and several specialised facilities in federal teaching hospitals and medical centres across the country.

Speaking virtually during the commissioning ceremony, President Tinubu described the projects as a significant milestone in Nigeria’s healthcare renewal agenda, stressing that quality and affordable healthcare should be accessible to all Nigerians.

He also launched 145 tricycle ambulances, six boat ambulances, and emergency communication equipment under the National Emergency Medical Service and Ambulance System (NEMSAS), aimed at strengthening emergency medical response, particularly in underserved communities.

The Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Professor Muhammad Ali Pate, said the investments reflect tangible progress towards achieving Universal Health Coverage by 2030, while the Minister of State for Health and Social Welfare, Dr Iziaq Adekunle Salako, revealed that more than 100 health projects have been initiated to commemorate the administration’s third year in office.

Among the flagship projects commissioned are a Trauma Centre at Ahmadu Bello University Teaching Hospital, Zaria; a Mental Health Complex at the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital; an Infertility and Assisted Reproductive Technology Centre in Bauchi; a Laboratory Complex at the University of Uyo Teaching Hospital; and the President Bola Ahmed Tinubu Complex at the Federal Medical Centre, Abuja.

Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, Daju Kachollom, said the ambulances would be deployed to rural primary healthcare centres, with trained drivers and nurses attached to ensure rapid response and improved referral services.

A statement signed by the Assistant Director, Information and Public Relations, Ado Bako, noted that the government has revitalised over 4,000 primary healthcare centres, expanded health insurance coverage by more than 33 per cent, and established 15 new federal tertiary health institutions as part of efforts to strengthen healthcare delivery under the Renewed Hope Agenda.
