WHO Launches Global Strategy To Build Emergency-Ready Health Workforce By 2030

As global health emergencies become more complex and unpredictable, world leaders and health experts are pushing for stronger preparedness systems to prevent future crises from spiralling out of control.

At the 79th World Health Assembly in Geneva, the World Health Organisation, WHO, alongside global partners, launched the Global Health Emergency Corps, GHEC, Strategy aimed at building resilient and emergency-ready health workforces in every country by 2030.

The strategy aims to ensure that at least 10 per cent of each country’s health workforce is trained, organised, and connected to respond rapidly to outbreaks, pandemics, and humanitarian emergencies.

Speaking at the launch, WHO Regional Director for the Eastern Mediterranean, Hanan Balkhy, stressed that health preparedness must move beyond last-minute reactions to become a sustained national priority.

The strategy also promotes stronger cross-border collaboration, simulation exercises, emergency coordination systems and investment in health workforce development to improve global response capacity during crises.

Countries and partners at the event agreed on four major priorities: organising emergency health teams, conducting regular drills, strengthening coordination mechanisms and connecting emergency networks across borders.

The event ended with a renewed call for solidarity and sustained investment to ensure every nation can respond swiftly and effectively to future health emergencies by 2030.
