FG Pushes United Front With Media To Safeguard Public Trust As Disinformation Threat Deepens:
In an era where false narratives can spread faster than facts, Nigeria’s government is calling for a united response to protect truth and public confidence.
At the 2026 World Press Freedom Day 2026 celebration in Abuja, the Federal Government urged stronger collaboration between the media, state institutions, and key stakeholders to combat the rising tide of misinformation and disinformation.
Speaking at the event held at Radio House, the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, stressed that collective action is critical to preserving national stability and trust.
He reaffirmed that press freedom remains a constitutional right, adding that the government is committed to ensuring a media environment that is free, safe, and responsible.
The Minister highlighted ongoing efforts under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to promote transparency, including improved media engagement and the implementation of the Freedom of Information Act.
He also pointed to Nigeria’s partnership with UNESCO in establishing the International Media and Information Literacy Institute in Abuja as a strategic move to strengthen citizens’ ability to critically engage with information.
Idris, however, challenged journalists to match press freedom with professionalism, fairness, and ethical responsibility, noting that the true measure of media freedom lies in how truthfully information is produced and consumed.
In her remarks, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Binyerem Ukaire, described the gathering as a vital platform for dialogue, warning that the rapid expansion of digital platforms has intensified the spread of misinformation and requires coordinated institutional responses.
The Federal Government reiterated its commitment to building a resilient information system through partnerships with the media, civil society, and international organisations, aimed at strengthening democracy, national unity, and sustainable development.
