2027: Nigerian Youth Urged To Reject ‘Political Masquerade’ and Demand Genuine Reform

As political realignments ahead of the 2027 general elections gather momentum, concerns are mounting that Nigeria’s political elite may once again recycle old power structures under new platforms, leaving millions of citizens trapped in the same cycle of hardship and disillusionment.

In a strongly worded commentary, public affairs analyst, Erasmus Ikhide, warned Nigerians, particularly the youth not to be deceived by what he described as the “illusion of opposition politics,” insisting that the country’s dominant political actors remain united by a common interest in preserving the status quo.

Drawing inspiration from late literary icon, Chinua Achebe, Ikhide argued that Nigeria’s long-standing leadership crisis has evolved into “a sophisticated architecture of deception” where citizens are repeatedly offered the same political choices under different banners.

He criticised the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and opposition figures including Atiku Abubakar, alleging that both the ruling and opposition camps operate within the same entrenched political framework.

Ikhide further claimed that critical national issues such as insecurity, economic hardship, electricity shortages, unemployment, healthcare collapse and constitutional reforms continue to receive inadequate attention from the political class.

According to him, Nigerian youths must move beyond social media activism and channel their numerical strength into demanding transparent elections, constitutional reforms and accountable leadership ahead of 2027.

Describing the 2023 elections as a wake-up call, he maintained that genuine change would only come through collective civic action and sustained pressure for reforms capable of dismantling what he termed the country’s “stranglehold politics.”
