Omidiran Pushes For Gender-Balanced Leadership At UN Women Summit
As global conversations intensify around inclusive governance and women’s leadership, Nigeria’s Federal Character Commission (FCC) Chairman, Hulayat Omidiran, has called for stronger commitment to gender balancing as a pathway to national unity and sustainable development.
Omidiran made the appeal while delivering a keynote address at a high-level side event titled “Global Women Partnership Without Borders” during the 70th session of the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women (CSW70) in New York.
The event, organised by the Betneely Charity Foundation, brought together policymakers, civil society actors and global stakeholders at Nigeria House to explore strategies for strengthening gender equality and international cooperation.
Speaking at the gathering, Omidiran stressed that no nation can truly thrive where exclusion persists, warning that an imbalance in governance weakens democratic institutions and national cohesion.
“Nationhood is more than a geographical expression; it is a shared covenant of belonging. Unity cannot flourish where exclusion persists,” she said.
The former lawmaker explained that gender balancing requires deliberate and equitable representation of women and men across leadership, governance, economic participation and social engagement.
According to her, inclusive leadership structures deepen public trust, enrich policy discussions and produce stronger outcomes in addressing complex national challenges.
She reaffirmed the Federal Character Commission’s commitment to promoting fairness, equity and balanced representation in Nigeria’s public institutions, noting that empowering women and marginalised groups unlocks the full potential of society.
Omidiran urged leaders across the world to prioritise policies that strengthen equality and inclusive participation, insisting that national unity is built through systems that respect and dignify every citizen.
The event also featured notable Nigerian leaders including former Minister of Women Affairs, Pauline Tallen, while the current Minister of Women Affairs, Imaan Sulaiman-Ibrahim, attended as a special guest.
