Troops Repel ISWAP Attack On Borno Base, Recover Weapons

ISWAP fighters were forced to retreat after troops of Operation Hadin Kai repelled a multi-pronged attack on a military base in Borno State, the Nigerian Army has said.

The attack occurred at about 2am on Saturday at Forward Operating Base Mandaragirau in Biu Local Government Area, according to the Theatre Command.

The terrorists approached the base from two fronts but were detected by the troops’ surveillance and early-warning systems

A combat team intercepted one group, triggering a heavy exchange of fire, while another group attempting to infiltrate the base was also repelled by troops.

The military said the attackers withdrew in confusion as troops pursued them and searched their escape routes.

Several terrorists were reportedly killed, while troops recovered AK-47 rifles with loaded magazines, a rocket-propelled grenade launcher with bombs and chargers, a camcorder and other military equipment.

The Army said surveillance footage later showed some of the surviving fighters dragging away the bodies of their dead colleagues towards the Timbuktu Triangle.

No casualty was recorded among the troops, according to the statement.

The Theatre Command commended the 162 Amphibious Battalion for what it described as a decisive response, saying the operation demonstrated the troops’ readiness to deny terrorists freedom of action in the North-East.
