Troops Repel Midnight Terror Attacks In Borno, Kill Insurgent Commanders
A wave of coordinated terrorist assaults on military positions in Borno State has been decisively repelled by Nigerian troops, highlighting the continuing pressure insurgents face across the North-East theatre.
Troops of the Joint Task Force (North East), Operation HADIN KAI, successfully foiled multiple overnight attacks on military locations in Konduga, Marte, Jakana and Mainok after heavily armed terrorists launched a series of assaults between about 10:30pm and 3:00am.
According to the military, the attackers met stiff resistance from alert troops who held their ground despite the intensity of the attacks.
In a coordinated counter-offensive, reinforcement teams from Sectors 1 and 2 carried out flanking manoeuvres that forced the insurgents into disorganised retreat.
In areas where parts of the defensive perimeter were briefly breached, troops swiftly regrouped, counter-attacked and regained full control of their positions.
Military authorities said several insurgent leaders, including key commanders known as Amirs, were neutralised during the fierce engagements, while a number of fighters were eliminated.
Air support also played a crucial role in the operation. The Air Component of Operation HADIN KAI conducted precision strikes on fleeing terrorists and identified hostile positions overnight, further degrading the insurgents’ fighting capability.
Troops are currently carrying out exploitation operations in the affected areas, recovering weapons, equipment and the bodies of neutralised terrorists.
However, the military confirmed that some gallant soldiers lost their lives during the battle, including an officer who reportedly led his troops from the front in the fight against the attackers.
Despite the losses, the military said all bases remain firmly under the control of Operation HADIN KAI forces, describing the failed assaults as a sign of the growing desperation of terrorist groups under sustained military pressure in the region.
