ECOWAS At 50: Vice-President Meets Togo’s Foreign Minister Ahead Of ‘Summit Of The Future’

As West Africa stands at a historic crossroads, preparations for the future of regional integration are gathering momentum.

The Vice-President of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), Damtien Tchintchibidja, has held high-level talks with Togo’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Robert Dussey, in Lomé ahead of the much-anticipated ECOWAS “Summit of the Future” and the grand finale of activities marking the bloc’s 50th anniversary.

The meeting, focused on reviewing organisational arrangements and strengthening coordination to ensure the success of the landmark regional events.

With ECOWAS celebrating five decades of promoting economic integration, peace and regional cooperation, the upcoming summit is expected to chart a new course for the bloc amid shifting political, security and economic dynamics in West Africa.

Discussions between the Commission’s delegation and Togolese authorities centred on logistical preparedness, diplomatic coordination and strategic alignment for the summit, which is widely seen as an opportunity to redefine the institution’s priorities for the next 50 years.

The engagement also underscores Togo’s pivotal role in hosting and supporting key regional initiatives at a time when ECOWAS is navigating complex challenges ranging from democratic transitions to security threats and economic resilience.

As the golden jubilee celebrations draw to a close, attention is now firmly fixed on what the “Summit of the Future” will deliver, not just as a ceremonial milestone, but as a decisive moment in shaping the destiny of West Africa.
