BIPOGA 2026 Day 3: Umuahia and Force HQ In Tight Gold Race As Benin Tops Total Medals
By Princess-Ekwi Ajide
At major multi-sport events, the medal table is more than a scoreboard, it is a mirror of preparation, depth and competitive hunger.
By Day 3 of the BIPOGA 2026 Games, that mirror is reflecting a thrillingly tight race at the top, with no single zone running away with the honours.
Zone 9 Umuahia and Force Headquarters are locked in a fierce battle for gold supremacy, each claiming seven gold medals as the competition enters a decisive phase.
While Umuahia edges on silver count with four to Force Headquarters’ three, Force HQ’s stronger bronze haul keeps them firmly in contention in the overall medal race.
However, the surprise leader on total medals is Zone 5 Benin, which has quietly built a broad medal base with 15 medals (2 gold, 4 silver, 9 bronze).
The consistency across events suggests depth rather than reliance on a few standout performances, a strategy that could pay dividends as finals intensify.
Close behind the leaders, Zone 16 Yenagoa and Zone 2 Lagos are emerging as strong podium threats, each posting 13 and 12 total medals respectively, driven largely by dominant silver and bronze finishes.
Yenagoa’s five silver medals underline near-misses that could convert to gold as momentum builds.
Further down the table, Zone 11 Osogbo and Zone 13 Ukpo Dunukofia are maintaining solid mid-table positions, while Zone 1 Kano and Zone 8 Lokoja have both opened their gold accounts with two medals apiece, signalling potential late surges.
At the lower end, Zones including Yola, Katsina, Markudi and Sokoto have registered bronze medals, showing growing competitiveness, while Bauchi and Maiduguri are yet to get on the medal board, a reminder of the uneven resource and preparation gaps across zones that BIPOGA seeks to bridge through sport.
With several events still to be decided, the Day 3 rankings point to a gripping finish.
The narrow margins at the top mean that a single standout performance could reshape the leaderboard overnight, and that unpredictability is exactly what is keeping athletes, coaches and fans locked in.
