INEC Sets Early Pace For 2027, Targets Global Standards At Lagos Strategy Retreat
As public scrutiny of Nigeria’s elections intensifies, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has moved to lay an early and deliberate foundation for the 2027 General Election, signalling that credibility will be built long before voters head to the polls.
At a two-day induction and strategic retreat in Lagos on Friday, INEC Chairman, Prof. Joash Amupitan, SAN, said the Commission is strengthening its leadership, systems and internal cohesion to meet rising national and international expectations.
He stressed that early planning, coordination and strict adherence to the rule of law would be decisive in delivering elections that are free, fair, transparent and inclusive.
Prof. Amupitan noted that before 2027, INEC must successfully conduct key electoral exercises, including the February 2026 FCT Area Council elections and the off-cycle governorship polls in Ekiti and Osun States, describing them as vital testing grounds for logistics, voter management and the deployment of technology such as BVAS.
He outlined five non-negotiable pillars guiding the Commission’s work: independence from interference, fairness, credibility, transparency and inclusivity. With a surge in young, digitally savvy voters expected by 2027, the INEC boss said building real-time transparency and trust is no longer optional.
The retreat, he explained, is focused on 17 critical thematic areas, ranging from voter registration and election security to campaign finance, result management and personnel training.
It also serves as an induction platform for newly appointed National Commissioners and Resident Electoral Commissioners.
Earlier, Lagos REC Prof. Ayobami Salami described the retreat as timely, noting that institutional unity and early strategic alignment are essential as INEC moves towards its biggest electoral test yet.
INEC says the lessons drawn from this engagement will shape reforms aimed at strengthening public confidence in Nigeria’s democratic process ahead of 2027.
