Troops Crack Suicide Bombing Network As Mastermind Falls In North-East Sweep
Nigeria’s counterterrorism fight recorded a decisive breakthrough as troops dismantled a deadly suicide bombing cell that had operated quietly within civilian communities in the North-East.
Troops of the Joint Task Force (North-East), Operation HADIN KAI (OPHK), have identified and apprehended Shariff Umar, also known as Yusuf, described as the principal coordinator of suicide bombing operations across the region.
Security sources say the arrest has exposed the inner workings of one of the most lethal terror cells active in recent months.
The breakthrough followed intelligence-led cordon-and-search operations conducted on 31 December 2025 in the Kalmari area of Maiduguri, where 14 suspects were arrested.
Investigations were further strengthened by information provided by Ibrahim Muhammad, a suspected suicide bomber who was apprehended earlier in Damaturu, Yobe State.
According to military findings, Umar was responsible for recruiting, indoctrinating, and deploying suicide bombers to carefully selected targets.
He was directly linked to the devastating suicide bombing at the Gamboru Market Mosque on 24 December 2025, an attack that claimed several lives and sent shockwaves through the community.
Security operatives also revealed that Umar personally coordinated a foiled suicide bombing attempt in Damaturu, during which he allegedly handed over Improvised Explosive Device (IED) components to an operative in Maiduguri.
This direct involvement, authorities say, confirms his central role in planning and execution rather than remote supervision.
Investigations uncovered the disturbing use of family networks to conceal terrorist activities.
Umar’s wife, Yagana Modu, and his stepdaughter, Amina, were identified as accomplices, highlighting how terror groups increasingly exploit domestic environments to evade detection and move weapons and explosives unnoticed.
During follow-up operations linked to the arrests, troops uncovered a significant cache of ammunition and materials believed to be intended for future attacks, dealing a further blow to the network’s operational capacity.
Military authorities say the arrests and seizures underscore the effectiveness of sustained intelligence-driven operations and community vigilance in degrading terrorist networks.
They reaffirmed the Armed Forces’ commitment to denying insurgents freedom of action and restoring lasting peace in the North-East.
