A swift police response and the courage of a would-be victim prevented what could have been a deadly Christmas night robbery in Awka, the Anambra State capital.

Operatives of the Anambra State Police Command have arrested a suspected armed robber, Nicholas Nweke, following a foiled robbery attempt that involved the discharge of a firearm and left two innocent bystanders injured.

According to the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Ikenga Tochukwu, officers attached to the Central Police Station (CPS), Awka, responded promptly to a distress call reporting an attempted robbery within the metropolis on Christmas night.

The suspect was reportedly attempting to rob a victim at gunpoint with a pump-action rifle when the victim resisted, leading to a struggle over the weapon.

Police officers arrived at the scene to find both men wrestling for control of the firearm before successfully subduing and arresting the suspect.

Items recovered from the suspect include a pump-action rifle, five expended cartridges, an Itel mobile phone and ₦1,200 in cash.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the suspect had demanded the victim’s mobile phone and other belongings.

When the victim refused, the suspect allegedly fired shots, with pellets hitting two unsuspecting bystanders.

The injured individuals were rushed to a nearby hospital and are currently in stable condition, responding to treatment.

SP Ikenga added that the case has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Awka, for further investigation.
