Four Die As Suicide Bomber Strikes Gamboru Market Mosque
What should have been a moment of quiet devotion on Christmas Eve turned into tragedy in Maiduguri, underscoring the fragile security realities in Nigeria’s North-East even during the festive season.
At least four civilians have been confirmed dead following a suicide bomb attack at a mosque inside Gamboru Market, Maiduguri Metropolitan Council, on Tuesday evening, 24 December 2025.
The explosion occurred around 6:00 p.m. as Muslim worshippers observed evening prayers.
According to Operation HADIN KAI (OPHK), preliminary investigations indicate that the blast was caused by a suspected Boko Haram terrorist who detonated an improvised explosive device, killing himself and two civilians instantly.
Two other victims later died at the hospital.
A total of 32 civilians sustained varying degrees of injuries, with two reported to be in critical condition.
Others are said to be stable and receiving treatment at the General Hospital and the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital.
Troops, working alongside the Nigeria Police Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team, sister security agencies, the Borno State Government and NEMA, swiftly secured the area to prevent further casualties.
In response to the incident, security has been intensified across Maiduguri and its environs.
Residents have been urged to remain vigilant during the yuletide season and to promptly report any suspicious movements to security agencies.
Operation HADIN KAI expressed condolences to the families of the deceased and reassured the public of its continued commitment to protecting lives and property in the North-East.
