NAF Seeks Stronger Ties With Journalists, Calls For Responsible Security Reporting

In an era where misinformation can spark national panic and compromise security operations, the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) is strengthening its alliance with journalists, recognising them as essential partners in safeguarding the nation.

The Director of Public Relations and Information, Air Commodore Ehimen Ejodame, made the call during an interactive session with members of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), FCT Council, who paid a courtesy visit to the NAF Headquarters in Abuja on Thursday.

Describing journalists as “frontline workers,” Air Commodore Ejodame likened the relationship between the Air Force and the media to a marriage built on trust, honesty, and understanding.

“We operate in different spaces, but both of us deal with information that can save lives,” he said. “Some conversations belong in the public domain, while others require discretion.

When we withhold certain details, it’s not secrecy, it’s about protecting lives.”

He emphasised that careless handling of sensitive information, such as troop movements or casualty figures, could endanger ongoing operations or personnel.

Ejodame also urged journalists to combat fake news and ensure accuracy, warning that misinformation could inadvertently aid insurgents and other hostile groups.

Highlighting the Air Force’s evolving strategy, he noted that NAF is becoming a smarter, people-centred force focused on precision, intelligence, and civilian protection.

“The Nigerian Air Force is not just about bombs and bullets. We are building an Air Force that is technology-driven and sensitive to civilian safety,” he added.

In her remarks, NUJ FCT Chairperson, Ms Grace Ike, lauded the NAF for its professionalism and commitment to national security, pledging the union’s continued partnership in promoting factual, responsible journalism.

She noted that the visit aimed to strengthen collaboration between the media and the Air Force, particularly in countering fake news and enhancing public enlightenment on security matters.

“Open communication between the military and the media is key to building public trust and combating misinformation,” she said.

Ms Ike also congratulated the NAF Football Team on their recent victory at the NUJ FCT Football Tournament, describing it as a testament to discipline, teamwork, and excellence, values that define the Nigerian Air Force.
