Tinubu’s Reforms Empower States To Deliver More For Citizens – Minister
In what appears to be growing evidence that President Bola Tinubu’s reform agenda is beginning to yield results, the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, has said that ongoing economic reforms have freed up significant resources, enabling state governments to deliver more people-oriented projects.
Idris made this known on Thursday during an inspection tour of federal and state projects in Borno State, alongside Commissioners of Information from All Progressives Congress (APC)-governed states, as part of their quarterly strategic meeting.
“The reform agenda of Mr President is working. It’s putting resources into the coffers of the subnationals so that they can use it to work for the people,” the Minister said.
The delegation visited several key projects, including the newly completed 12MW Hybrid Solar Power Plant at the University of Maiduguri, developed by the Rural Electrification Agency (REA) with World Bank support.
The University’s Vice Chancellor, Professor Mohammed Mele, revealed that the plant now powers both the university and its teaching hospital, saving the institution about ₦170 million monthly in electricity costs.
They also toured the 50MW Maiduguri Emergency Power Plant, which was initially commissioned by the Buhari administration but has now been ramped up to full capacity under President Tinubu, ensuring a steady electricity supply to the city and surrounding areas.
In addition, the Borno State Government showcased its achievements, including the construction of 104 mega schools within one year and the ongoing work on 35 others.
Minister Idris praised Governor Babagana Zulum for channelling increased state revenues into education, calling it “an investment in the future of Borno’s children.”
The team further inspected the soon-to-be-commissioned Borno Express Terminus Flyover, the state’s fourth flyover, as well as the Herwa EV Station, one of seven electric vehicle charging facilities developed with the support of the North East Development Commission (NEDC).
Idris said the project aligns with the federal government’s clean energy and renewable technology initiatives.
Work is also progressing on the international wing of the Muhammadu Buhari International Airport, Maiduguri, which President Tinubu approved for upgrade earlier this year, a move that will make it the only international airport in the North East.
“This is what the synergy between the federal government and the subnationals can do,” Idris said, underscoring the collaborative spirit driving development across the country.
