Philippines, Nigeria To Deepen Labour and Migration Ties

The Philippines has pledged to strengthen diplomatic relations with Nigeria, with a focus on labour, migration, and other sectors of the economy.

Philippine Secretary of Migrant Workers, Hans Cacdac, made the commitment during a visit to Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Yusuf Tuggar, in Abuja.

He said the initiative aligns with President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s mandate to deepen bilateral labour relations with countries hosting thousands of Filipinos, including the 4,000–6,000 currently working in Nigeria.

Cacdac praised Nigeria as a safe and welcoming environment for Filipinos, announcing plans to establish a Labour Office with a labour attaché at the Philippine Embassy in Abuja to coordinate with Nigerian authorities, combat illegal recruitment and human trafficking, and provide support for the Filipino community.

Tuggar described the Nigeria–Philippines relationship as longstanding, dating back to Nigeria’s independence, and highlighted the contributions of Filipino professionals in education, aviation, and maritime sectors.

He reiterated President Bola Tinubu’s commitment to protecting Nigerian workers abroad, ensuring they work with dignity while also generating economic benefits for the nation.

The Philippine delegation included senior officials responsible for international cooperation, pre-employment matters, and anti-human trafficking efforts.
