Team Nigeria Chases Gold In Seven Finals At African School Games, Bags Four Bronze On Day 1
Team Nigeria is set to light up Day 2 of athletics at the ongoing African School Games in Algeria, with its young stars storming into seven finals, including the highly anticipated boys’ and girls’ 100m races.
Leading the charge are Miracle Ezechukwu and Rosemary Nwankwo, the only two athletes to run sub-12 seconds in the girls’ 100m semifinals, clocking 11.83s and 11.72s respectively.
Chinazor Rita Ekwaeme and Bernice Onoriode will also fly the flag in the 100m hurdles final, while Jacinter Andrew, who ran an impressive 56.92s, will contest for a medal in the girls’ 400m.
In the boys’ events, Jesulayomi Ogundijo and Faye Perfect will line up in the 400m final, and Akolo, fresh off a 10.93s semifinal win, is set to challenge in the 100m final.
Meanwhile, Day 1 of the Games brought early success for Nigeria. In taekwondo, David Ibokette (55kg) and Unique Umeh (49kg) both clinched bronze after hard-fought semifinal bouts against Algerian opponents.
Athletics also delivered its first medals, with Judith Ukandu taking bronze in the girls’ shot put and Mohammed Jimoh finishing third in the boys’ long jump.
With eyes now firmly set on gold, Team Nigeria’s young talents are proving they’re ones to watch on the continental stage.
