Akwa Ibom First Lady Designate Applauds Female Lawmakers For Championing Special Seats For Women
The First Lady Designate of Akwa Ibom State, Lady Helen Eno Obareki, has applauded female members of the State House of Assembly for backing the proposed constitutional amendment to create special seats for women in parliament.
During a courtesy visit to her office at Government House, Uyo, the female legislators received warm commendation for their bold stance in advocating the Special Seats for Women Bill.
The bill seeks to amend Sections 48 and 49 of the Constitution to ensure that each state and the FCT reserves one legislative seat in the Senate, House of Representatives, and House of Assembly exclusively for women.
Lady Obareki, who warmly welcomed the lawmakers, also praised their commitment to mentoring young girls and promoting awareness of their rights.
She expressed her openness to learning from their wealth of experience, saying, “My doors are open for your advice, counsel and guidance as we work together for the good of women and girls in Akwa Ibom.”
Speaking on behalf of her colleagues, Hon. Selena Ukpatu, who represents Ikot Abasi/Eastern Obolo and chairs the House Committee on Women Affairs, pledged the full support of the female caucus for the initiatives of the First Lady’s office.
Also present was the Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Welfare, Hon. Inibehe Silas, who praised Governor Umo Eno’s administration for placing women at the forefront of governance and ensuring their voices are heard across all sectors.
Other lawmakers in attendance included Hon. (Dr.) Itoro Etim of Uruan, Chair of the House Committee on Appropriations & Finance; Hon. Kenim Onofiok of Oron/Udung Uko, member House Committee on Education; and Hon. Precious Selong of Urue-Offong/Oruko, member of the Committee on Boundary Matters.
Their united front sent a clear message: Akwa Ibom women are not just occupying space—they are shaping the future.
