Ndigbo Young Professionals Slam NOPRIN’s Nwanguma Over ‘False’ Police Reform Claims

The Ndigbo Young Professionals (NYP) has fired back at Okechukwu Nwanguma, who claims to be the National Coordinator of the Network on Police Reform in Nigeria (NOPRIN), accusing him of spreading falsehoods and misrepresenting the state of police reforms.

In a strongly worded statement signed by its National Coordinator, Ambassador Chinonso Chukwuemeka, the group described Nwanguma’s recent article titled “Weaponising Propaganda: Nigeria Police, Phantom Support Groups, And The War On Truth” as “highly misleading and fallacious.”

Ambassador Chukwuemeka said the NYP would normally ignore what he described as “a one-man show masquerading as a national network,” but was forced to speak out to counter misinformation.

He stated that the NYP is a coalition of professionals including members of the military, police, and civil service working to support meaningful reform of the police institution.

“We are not a one-man organisation parading as a reform body while diverting foreign funds meant for genuine police reform,” Chukwuemeka said, claiming that NOPRIN has received significant foreign grants without providing transparent or measurable outcomes.

According to him, NYP will soon release details of such grants and hold Nwanguma accountable for their use.

He also pushed back on Nwanguma’s criticism of poor police salaries, saying such issues are under the Federal Government’s purview.

Chukwuemeka praised the current Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, for his proactive stance on police welfare.

“The IGP has put structures in place to tackle pension corruption. As of May 2025, more than N23 billion has been disbursed to 8,311 families under the Group Life Assurance and Family Welfare Insurance Schemes,” he said.

While distancing the NYP from the leadership of the Police Force, Chukwuemeka reaffirmed the group’s independence, adding that their mission is to support a people-focused, accountable, and professional police system in line with Nigeria’s development aspirations.
