2027: Ex-ADC Chair Reveals Seven Coalition Heavyweights Eyeing Tinubu’s Seat

As political calculations ahead of the 2027 general elections intensify, former National Chairman of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Ralph Nwosu, has disclosed that no fewer than seven prominent figures within the opposition coalition are being backed to challenge President Bola Tinubu at the polls.

Speaking in an interview with Punch, Nwosu revealed that the coalition, which recently adopted the ADC as its political platform, is gaining traction under the leadership of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi.

According to him, although whispers of northern backing for a one-term Peter Obi presidency are growing louder, other political heavyweights also have their supporters firmly in the ring.

Among those reportedly being tipped are former Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi; ex-Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai; former Osun State Governor, Rauf Aregbesola; and Bamidele Ajadi, the ADC’s 2023 governorship candidate in Oyo State.

Nwosu emphasised that despite the behind-the-scenes lobbying, the ADC will adopt an open selection process to choose its presidential candidate.

As the coalition gains ground, it appears to be unsettling the traditional powerhouses, with defections from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) reportedly on the rise.

With just over two years to the next general election, Nigeria’s political landscape is already beginning to shift—and the opposition bloc may be preparing for its strongest challenge yet.
