Team Nigeria has kicked off its campaign at the 2025 Senior African Wrestling Championships in Casablanca, Morocco, with a stunning golden haul clinching four gold medals on the opening day.

Despite the setback of star wrestler Mercy Adekuoroye pulling out due to illness, the remaining Nigerian contingent rose to the occasion in spectacular fashion.

Christianah Ogunsanya (53kg), Esther Kolawole (62kg), Hannah Reuben (68kg), and Damola Ojo (76kg) each delivered gold-winning performances to send Nigeria soaring to the top of the medal table.

Ogunsanya set the pace with a commanding 10-0 semifinal win over Morocco’s Zineb Chabki before securing gold. Kolawole followed with an identical 10-0 triumph against Senegal’s Safietou Goudialy, while Reuben overpowered Egypt’s Mariam Mesbah 11-0 in a show of technical brilliance. Ojo completed the quartet’s dominance with a solid win in her category.

Reacting to the clean sweep, the Director General of the National Sports Commission (NSC), Hon. Bukola Olopade, praised the team’s performance as “phenomenal,” describing it as a testament to Nigeria’s growing legacy in African wrestling.

A statement signed by the SA Media office of the Director General, National Sports Commission, Kola Daniel says the championships continue through 4th May at the Complexe Sportif Mohammed V in Casablanca, with Team Nigeria aiming to extend its golden run.
