2027: Government Urged To Strengthen Protection For Journalists

With journalists expected to document one of Nigeria’s most closely watched electoral processes, press freedom advocate Livinus Chibuike Victor has called on the Federal Government and security agencies to strengthen measures for their safety ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Victor said journalists and other media workers must be able to report from polling units and other sensitive locations without harassment, intimidation, assault, unlawful detention or obstruction.

He urged the government, INEC, the Nigeria Police Force and other security agencies to establish clear safety protocols, rapid-response mechanisms for emergencies and proper guidelines for security personnel dealing with accredited journalists.

According to him, protecting journalists is not a favour to the media but a necessary part of safeguarding democracy and the public’s access to credible information.

Victor also called on political parties, candidates, security agencies and other stakeholders to work with media organisations and journalists’ associations to create a safe environment for journalists to perform their constitutional and professional duties during the elections.
