ECOWAS, France Deepen Cooperation As Leaders Tackle Regional Security Challenges
Efforts to strengthen cooperation between West Africa and France have come under renewed focus, with security challenges dominating talks between ECOWAS Commission President, General Birame Diop, and French Ambassador to ECOWAS, Marc Fonbaustier.
Fonbaustier made the remarks during a visit to General Diop in Abuja on Thursday, September 17, 2026, where both officials reviewed ECOWAS-France relations and the security situation across the region.
Discussions centred on terrorism, organised crime, cybercrime, cross-border crime, as well as the growing threats posed by misinformation and disinformation.
General Diop expressed appreciation for the longstanding friendship and cooperation between ECOWAS and France, pledging to build on the relationship inherited from previous administrations.
“We will add our own values to these relationships that we have inherited from our predecessors,” he said.
The meeting comes as ECOWAS continues efforts to address security threats and promote peace and stability across West Africa.
