NUJ FCT Urges TV Cameramen To Embrace Digital Skills, Raise Professional Standards
As technology reshapes news gathering and storytelling, media professionals are being urged to continuously upgrade their skills to remain relevant in an increasingly digital broadcasting landscape.
The Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), FCT Council, Comrade Grace Ike, made the call during the inauguration of the newly elected executive of the Society of Practicing Television Cameramen (SOPTCAM), FCT Chapter, on Saturday in Abuja.
Congratulating the new leadership, Ike described the inauguration as a defining moment for broadcast journalism, stressing that the profession now requires technical excellence, ethical practice, creative storytelling and digital fluency.
She pledged the support of the NUJ FCT Council in promoting professional development through workshops, certification programmes, digital upskilling and advocacy initiatives aimed at improving members’ welfare.
Ike also encouraged television cameramen to embrace emerging technologies, digital production, multimedia storytelling and online platforms that create new opportunities for innovation, audience engagement and revenue generation.
In his acceptance speech, the newly inaugurated Chairman of SOPTCAM FCT, Mr Ekundayo Femi, described the occasion as historic, noting that it marked the association’s first democratically elected executive in the Federal Capital Territory.
He unveiled a six-point agenda centred on professional training, members’ welfare, discipline, unity, transparency and greater visibility, pledging to strengthen the growth and dignity of television cameramen.
National Chairman of SOPTCAM, Comrade Olugbenga Adejuwon, urged members to build strong professional identities, uphold integrity, honour contracts and embrace digital platforms while telling compelling stories that project Nigeria positively.
The inauguration signals a renewed drive to strengthen professionalism, improve members’ welfare and position television cameramen to thrive in the rapidly evolving media industry.
