Nigerian Navy Backs NAWOJ’s WINSEC 2026, Pledges Stronger Media-Security Partnership
As collaboration between the media and security agencies gains increasing importance in tackling Nigeria’s security challenges, the Nigerian Navy has pledged full support for the Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ)’s Women in Security (WINSEC) Summit & Awards 2026.
The commitment was made during a courtesy visit by the NAWOJ National Chairperson, Comrade Aisha Ibrahim, and her delegation to the Chief of the Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Idi Abbas, who was represented by the Chief of Naval Transformation and Innovation, Rear Admiral Chijioke Onyemaobi, at the Naval Headquarters in Abuja.
Rear Admiral Onyemaobi assured the association that the Navy would not only participate in the summit, scheduled for 5 August 2026 at the Transcorp Hilton, Abuja, but would also provide support to ensure its success.
He praised NAWOJ for creating a platform that advances dialogue on security, peacebuilding and women’s inclusion, while reaffirming the Navy’s commitment to gender equality through increased opportunities for women in operational and leadership roles.
Earlier, Comrade Ibrahim commended the Nigerian Navy’s role in protecting Nigeria’s maritime domain and supporting the Federal Government’s Blue Economy Agenda.
She called for a long-term partnership with the Navy through capacity building, strategic communication and advocacy on maritime security, women, peace and security, environmental sustainability and youth engagement.
Both organisations expressed optimism that closer collaboration would strengthen public understanding of security issues and contribute to a safer and more prosperous Nigeria.
