ECOWAS Ushers In New Leadership As Senegal Takes Helm
West Africa’s regional bloc has entered a new phase of leadership with key appointments expected to shape its integration, peace and governance agenda in the coming years.
At the 69th ECOWAS Summit of Heads of State and Government held on Sunday in Freetown, Sierra Leone, Senegalese President Bassirou Diomaye Faye assumed the chairmanship of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government.
The summit also appointed General Birame Diop, Senegal’s former Minister of Defence, former Chief of the General Staff of the Senegalese Armed Forces and former adviser to the United Nations Secretary-General, as the new President of the ECOWAS Commission.
General Diop will officially assume office on 1 September 2026 at the ECOWAS Commission headquarters in Abuja, Nigeria.
The leadership transition comes as ECOWAS continues efforts to strengthen regional integration, enhance security cooperation and address political and economic challenges across West Africa.
