As excitement builds ahead of the FIFA World Cup final, global attention is also turning to football’s growing role beyond the pitch, with the sport being championed as a powerful tool for improving young people’s mental health and well-being.

Nigeria’s Football For the Goal Champion, Daniel Amokachi, joined football legends, young people, mental health advocates and activists at the United Nations Headquarters in New York on Friday for an event themed, “One World, One Game, One Goal: Football as a Catalyst for Youth Mental Health and Well-Being.”

The gathering highlighted how football can strengthen social connections, promote emotional well-being and provide young people with a sense of belonging, especially at a time when mental health challenges among youths are rising globally.

Organised by the United Nations Youth Affairs, the event reinforced the message that football is more than a game, serving as a unifying force capable of inspiring hope, inclusion and healthier communities.
