Umo Eno Highlights Welfare, Education and Flood Response In Busy Week Of Governance

A week marked by welfare interventions, education funding and emergency response has reinforced the Akwa Ibom State Government’s effort to combine social support with infrastructure and governance reforms.

Akwa Ibom State Governor, Pastor Umo Eno, has stepped up social welfare, education and environmental interventions, with a series of initiatives aimed at easing economic hardship and improving public services across the state.

During the week, the governor flagged off the fourth phase of the ARISE Free Food Distribution Programme, which will see 217,000 bags of rice and beans distributed across the state’s 31 local government areas through the Social Register. He said the programme targets the most vulnerable households while encouraging residents to embrace subsistence farming to boost food security.

Governor Eno also approved ₦1.968 billion for the payment of examination fees for students and released ₦1.3 billion for bursaries, increasing the bursary award from ₦20,000 to ₦50,000 per beneficiary as part of efforts to reduce the financial burden on families and invest in education.

Following heavy flooding in parts of Uyo, the governor visited affected communities to sympathise with victims and ordered a review of the state’s flood control strategy. He also warned against indiscriminate dumping of refuse in drainage channels and announced stricter enforcement of environmental sanitation laws.

In infrastructure, Governor Eno inspected the Judiciary Quarters project, issuing contractors a two-week ultimatum to improve the pace of work or risk contract termination. He also inspected the Arise Palm Resort ahead of its planned commissioning in September and reviewed other strategic projects.

The governor further unveiled plans for a comprehensive five-year development plan, announced that free internet service would soon commence at Victor Attah International Airport, and reaffirmed continued support for the National Youth Service Corps after honouring an outstanding corps member for exceptional community service.

The activities formed part of what the governor’s office described as a people-focused agenda centred on welfare, accountability, infrastructure development and responsive leadership.
