ECOWAS Pushes For Greater Accountability, Institutional Efficiency At Freetown Meeting
As West Africa grapples with mounting economic and political challenges, the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) is turning its attention inward, seeking stronger accountability and more efficient management of resources across its institutions.
The 39th Meeting of the ECOWAS Administration and Finance Committee (AFC) opened in Freetown, Sierra Leone, on Sunday, bringing together representatives of Member States and Community institutions to review key administrative, financial and institutional matters.
The three-day meeting, scheduled for 12 to 14 July 2026, will consider reports and proposals on finance, human resources, budget implementation and institutional performance, with recommendations expected to improve accountability and strengthen ECOWAS’ regional integration efforts.
Vice President of the ECOWAS Commission, Mrs Damtien Tchintchibidja, said the bloc’s Golden Jubilee offered an opportunity not only to celebrate its achievements but also to confront existing challenges and chart its future.
ECOWAS Commissioner for Internal Services, Dr Habibu Yaya Bappah, also praised the committee’s oversight role, noting that its recommendations have contributed to the organisation’s performance as a regional economic community.
Declaring the meeting open, AFC Chairman, Mr Komba Momoh, reaffirmed Sierra Leone’s commitment to working with Member States and ECOWAS institutions to advance regional integration, peace, security and sustainable development.
The committee plays a key role in scrutinising administrative, financial and budgetary matters, promoting prudent management of Community resources and strengthening accountability across ECOWAS institutions.
