Windstorm Kills Two Children In Bauchi, Police Warn Against Sheltering Under Trees During Storms
Sudden rain can offer relief from the heat, but in severe weather, seeking shelter in the wrong place can turn deadly.
Two children have died, and two others sustained injuries after a violent windstorm uprooted a tree under which they had taken shelter from heavy rainfall in Bashe Village, on the outskirts of Burra in Ningi Local Government Area of Bauchi State.
The Bauchi State Police Command said the tragic incident occurred at about 4 p.m. on Monday as five children sought refuge beneath the tree during a downpour accompanied by strong winds.
The victims were identified as Amina Maharazu, 8, Asiya Tasiu, 8, Samaila Tasiu, 10, Sulaiman M. Rabiu, 12, and Yusuf M. Salmanu, 8.
Police officers deployed to the scene rushed the children to the Primary Health Care Centre in Bashe, where Amina Maharazu and Asiya Tasiu were confirmed dead.
Samaila Tasiu escaped unhurt, while Sulaiman M. Rabiu and Yusuf M. Salmanu are receiving treatment and are said to be responding well.
Commissioner of Police Sani-Omolori Aliyu expressed condolences to the bereaved families and wished the injured a speedy recovery.
He also urged parents and guardians to educate children on the dangers of taking shelter under trees during storms and heavy rainfall.
Police said investigations into the incident are ongoing.
