UK Reaffirms Support For Nigeria’s Women, Peace And Security Agenda
Sustainable peace is more achievable when women are empowered to shape decisions that affect their communities.
That commitment received a fresh boost as the United Kingdom reaffirmed its support for Nigeria’s Women, Peace and Security (WPS) Agenda.
The Federal Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development welcomed the renewed commitment by the UK Government, through the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO), following discussions at the Nigeria–UK Defence and Security Forum.
The UK pledged continued support for the implementation of the United Nations Security Council Resolution 1325 (UNSCR 132), with a focus on strengthening women’s participation in peacebuilding, conflict prevention, mediation, stabilisation and post-conflict recovery.
The Ministry also applauded the impact of the UK’s SPRING Programme, describing it as instrumental in promoting inclusive peace and security, strengthening institutions and empowering women as key drivers of resilient communities.
Minister of Women Affairs and Social Development, Hon. Imaan Sulaiman-Ibrahim, said the renewed pledge would strengthen Nigeria’s efforts to fully implement the Women, Peace and Security Agenda.
She stressed that women must not only be protected during conflicts but also empowered to serve as leaders, negotiators and decision-makers in peace and security processes.
The Minister reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to deepen collaboration with international partners in advancing inclusive governance and sustainable peace through the meaningful participation of women.
