Democracy Day: FCC Chairman Reaffirms Commitment To Equity, Inclusive Governance
As Nigeria celebrates 27 years of uninterrupted democratic rule, the Chairman of the Federal Character Commission (FCC), Hulayat Motunrayo Omidiran, has pledged a stronger commitment to promoting equity, justice and national unity as critical pillars for sustaining the country’s democracy.
In a Democracy Day message marking June 12, Omidiran described the occasion as a significant milestone in Nigeria’s democratic journey and a reminder of the sacrifices made by patriots who fought for democratic governance, justice and national development.
She stressed that democracy can only thrive when citizens from every part of the country enjoy equal opportunities to participate in governance and contribute to national development, irrespective of their ethnic, religious, gender or social backgrounds.
According to the FCC boss, the Federal Character Principle remains a vital constitutional mechanism for fostering national integration, social cohesion and a sense of belonging among Nigerians, while ensuring that no section of the country is marginalised in access to opportunities and representation in public institutions.
Omidiran also assured Nigerians that the Commission would continue to strengthen transparency, accountability and fairness in carrying out its constitutional mandate, noting that inclusive governance is essential for building public trust in democratic institutions.
She commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, saying its focus on economic reforms, institutional strengthening, social inclusion and national development aligns with the Commission’s vision of creating a more equitable society where every Nigerian has the opportunity to succeed.
The FCC Chairman urged public institutions, private organisations and citizens to support initiatives that promote national unity, equal opportunity and sustainable development, emphasising that the success of the Renewed Hope Agenda depends on collective commitment to fairness, justice and shared prosperity.
She called on Nigerians to renew their faith in democracy and embrace unity in diversity as the nation works towards a stronger, more prosperous and globally competitive future.
