Nigeria, India Strengthen Defence, Security Ties, Push For Greater Global South Cooperation

As global security challenges become increasingly complex, Nigeria and India have reaffirmed their commitment to deepening strategic cooperation in defence, security, technology and sustainable development.

This commitment was reinforced during a courtesy visit by participants of the 66th Course of India’s National Defence College to Nigeria’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Abuja.

Receiving the delegation, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Ambassador Dunoma Umar Ahmed, highlighted the strong and longstanding relationship between both countries, built on shared democratic values, historical friendship and growing economic cooperation.

Ahmed emphasised Nigeria’s appreciation for India’s support in military training, professional development and defence cooperation, noting that such collaboration has strengthened institutional capacity and regional security efforts.

Discussions centred on Nigeria’s foreign policy priorities, regional security challenges, global geopolitical developments and opportunities for enhanced cooperation.

The Permanent Secretary also stressed the importance of stronger collaboration among countries of the Global South, reaffirming Nigeria’s commitment to South-South cooperation through platforms such as BRICS and other multilateral arrangements.

He further outlined Nigeria’s leadership role in Africa, including its contributions to peace and security initiatives, infrastructure development and economic integration under the African Union’s Agenda 2063.

Both sides explored opportunities for deeper cooperation in counter-terrorism, intelligence sharing, border management, professional military education and the use of emerging technologies to address evolving security threats.

Speaking on behalf of the delegation, Indian Defence Adviser to Nigeria, Colonel Manoj, commended the enduring partnership between the two nations and expressed confidence that sustained dialogue would further advance bilateral relations and contribute to global peace and development.

The meeting ended with a renewed commitment by Nigeria and India to expand cooperation across diplomacy, defence, security, education, technology and development.
