Nigeria’s Drop In Global Happiness Ranking Sparks Call For Urgent Social Reforms
Beyond economic figures and policy debates, how people feel about their daily lives often tells the real story of a nation’s progress.
Nigeria’s fall to 106th position in the 2026 World Happiness Report has triggered fresh concerns about widening social development gaps and the need for people-centred reforms.
The report, compiled by the University of Oxford’s Wellbeing Research Centre in collaboration with global partners, assesses wellbeing using indicators such as income, social support, life expectancy and public trust.
Analysts say Nigeria’s decline from 102nd place in 2024 reflects mounting pressure on households, as recent economic reforms, though aimed at long-term stability, have increased the cost of living and strained purchasing power.
Citizen advocate and President of the International Peace and Civic Responsibility Centre (IPCRC), Prince Chris Azor, noted that economic policies must be matched with strong social investment to truly improve living standards.
He stressed that without adequate support systems, many Nigerians continue to struggle with access to basic needs such as food, healthcare and education.
He further highlighted the importance of rebuilding public trust and strengthening institutions, noting that societies thrive when governance is transparent, inclusive and responsive to citizens’ needs.
The report also underscores the role of civil society in bridging the gap between policy and people, advocating for accountability and supporting community-based solutions that can ease the impact of economic challenges.
Observers maintain that Nigeria’s ranking should serve as a wake-up call for deeper collaboration between government, civil society and other stakeholders to prioritise social protection, human development and inclusive growth.
Ultimately, experts agree that improving citizens’ wellbeing, not just economic indicators, remains key to building a more stable and hopeful future.
