Panic Near Akure Airport As Security Agencies Arrest Four Suspected Bandits
Rising security concerns around critical infrastructure have again come into focus after a joint security operation led to the arrest of suspected bandits near Akure Airport.
The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) stated that four suspects were apprehended following a coordinated search operation involving aviation security personnel, the military, the police, local security outfits, and community vigilantes.
According to FAAN, some of the suspects tried to escape during the operation but were later captured by the joint security team.
The authority said the four arrested suspects have since been handed over to the Nigeria Police Force Area Command for further interrogation.
In a statement signed by FAAN’s Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, Henry Agbebire, the agency praised the collaboration among security agencies and community-based groups, including Amotekun, describing it as key to the success of the operation.
FAAN said the development highlights the urgent need to strengthen security around airport perimeters across the country.
The agency added that the Federal Government, through the Federal Ministry of Aviation and Aerospace Development, with the backing of the Presidency under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, has stepped up efforts to improve safety at airports nationwide.
According to the statement, the government is accelerating the provision of modern perimeter fencing and upgraded security infrastructure in phases across airports under FAAN’s management to prevent unlawful access and other threats.
FAAN also reassured travellers and host communities of its commitment to safeguarding airport facilities across Nigeria.
