IGP Disu Moves On State Police, Inaugurates Committee At First Strategic Conference With Senior Officers
Barely days after assuming office, the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, has signalled a major shift in policing strategy by inaugurating a steering committee to examine the establishment of State Police in Nigeria.
The IGP made the announcement during his inaugural conference with senior police officers held at the Peacekeeping Conference Centre, Force Headquarters, Abuja, where strategic managers of the Nigeria Police Force gathered for high-level deliberations on national security and institutional priorities.
The conference marked the first official strategic engagement between the new police chief and the senior leadership of the Force, aimed at aligning operational directives, reinforcing command responsibility and setting performance benchmarks for his administration.
In his opening remarks, IGP Disu charged senior officers to lead by example, enforce discipline decisively and uphold the highest ethical and professional standards.
He also announced the strengthening and revitalisation of internal accountability structures, including the Complaints Response Unit (CRU) and the X-Squad, to ensure that no police officer operates above the law.
The police boss reaffirmed his commitment to intelligence-led, evidence-based and technology-driven policing, backed by improved coordination, stronger intelligence systems and investment in modern investigative tools.
A key highlight of the conference was the inauguration of the Steering Committee on the Establishment of State Police, which the IGP described as both timely and significant in view of evolving security challenges across the country.
According to him, the committee will review policing models within and outside Nigeria, assess community security needs and emerging risks, and develop an operational framework for the possible establishment and coordination of State Police structures.
The body is also expected to address issues relating to recruitment, training, standards, resource allocation as well as accountability and oversight mechanisms that will strengthen professionalism and public trust.
IGP Disu, however, clarified that the concept of State Police is not intended to replace the Nigeria Police Force but to function as a complementary structure within a coordinated national security framework.
Members of the committee include Prof. Olu Ogunsakin, Director-General of the National Institute for Police Studies, Jabi, Abuja, who will serve as Chairman; CP Bode Ojajuni as Secretary; DCP Okebechi Agora, DCP Suleyman Gulma, ACP Ikechukwu Okafor, CSP Tolulope Ipinmisho, and CP Emmanuel Ojukwu (Rtd), Provost of the Police Public Relations School.
