Airpower As The Game-Changer: CDS Flags Off Operation Savannah Shield In Kwara

Security operations often fail not for lack of bravery, but for lack of speed and precision.

The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) is betting that airpower, deployed smartly and persistently, can tilt the balance against terror groups in Kwara State and beyond.

During an operational visit to the 303 Composite Group in Ilorin on Wednesday, Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal Sunday Kelvin Aneke, described airpower as a “decisive force multiplier” in counterterrorism, stressing that readiness must be a culture, not a one-off achievement.

He inspected aircraft, maintenance facilities and mission support infrastructure, commending personnel for their professionalism while pledging continued support in logistics, training and welfare.

The visit coincided with the flag-off of Operation Savannah Shield, by the Chief of Defence Staff, General Olufemi Oluyede, alongside other Service Chiefs.

The operation is intelligence-led and designed to combine kinetic and non-kinetic efforts, air surveillance, rapid response, and coordinated ground action, to deliver sustainable security outcomes in Kwara and neighbouring areas.

Kwara State Governor, AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, welcomed the operation, saying communities would “sleep better now” as security agencies intensify efforts to deny criminal elements safe havens.

He pledged the state’s continued cooperation to consolidate gains.

Air Marshal Aneke reaffirmed the NAF’s commitment to dominate the airspace, provide persistent surveillance and deliver precise air support wherever required, noting that adaptive strategies and inter-agency cooperation are vital as asymmetric threats evolve.

As Operation Savannah Shield begins, the Armed Forces are signalling a unified push: smarter intelligence, tighter coordination and airpower-led precision to protect communities and restore calm across vulnerable corridors.
