Classrooms Without Teachers: Anam High School Students Demand Urgent Government Action

When classrooms fall silent, it is often not because students have nothing to say, but because those meant to teach them are absent.

In Oroma Etiti Anam, Anambra West Local Government Area, students of Anam High School have broken that silence, raising alarm over alleged teacher absenteeism and shortages that they say are crippling their education.

The concerns came to light during a visit by Anam Youth Oshodi Lagos, which donated 1,080 exercise books and a customised signpost to the school to support learning and motivate students.

What began as a goodwill event quickly turned into a moment of truth, as some students stepped forward to describe what they called a troubling reality in their school.

According to the students, several teachers reportedly rarely attend classes, while others come and leave without teaching.

They said the situation has disrupted lessons and is already affecting their academic progress, fuelling fears about their preparedness for examinations and future opportunities.

Reacting to the allegations, the President-General of Oroma Etiti Anam, Chief Charles Nchezor, described the claims as disturbing and harmful to the educational development of the students.

While questioning why the complaints were not raised earlier, he urged the students to speak up promptly through appropriate channels whenever such issues arise.

Chief Nchezor pledged to personally monitor the situation by making regular visits to the school and reporting his findings to the relevant authorities.

He warned that any teacher found guilty of neglecting their duties would face consequences, describing such conduct as unacceptable and detrimental to the future of the children.

The episode has reignited calls for urgent intervention by the Anambra State Government to address staffing gaps and strengthen supervision in public schools in the area, as stakeholders warn that teacher absenteeism undermines the right of every child to quality education.
