ECOWAS, Sweden Deepen Partnership To Unlock Safer Labour Migration Across West Africa
When migration is managed well, it becomes a pathway to opportunity rather than a risk.
That was the spirit behind fresh talks in Abuja as ECOWAS and Sweden moved to strengthen the governance of labour migration and the region’s free movement regime.
The ECOWAS Commission met with a Swedish Embassy delegation on 3 February 2026 to review ongoing and planned initiatives aimed at promoting safe, orderly and regular migration, while supporting the effective implementation of ECOWAS free movement protocols.
Central to the discussions was progress on the Joint Labour Migration Programme (JLMP), following the approval of its third phase by Sweden’s development agency (SIDA) alongside Switzerland’s SDC.
The Swedish team, led by Joachim Beijmo, Head of Regional Development Cooperation in Africa, reaffirmed Stockholm’s commitment to supporting ECOWAS-led migration reforms through strategic partnerships and programme-based cooperation.
Senior officials from ECOWAS’ Directorates of Free Movement and Humanitarian Affairs also took part, highlighting a coordinated regional approach to mobility, development and protection.
Both sides underscored the importance of policy coherence and institutional coordination in turning labour mobility into a driver of development, peace and stability across West Africa.
The meeting ended with a shared pledge to sustain dialogue and collaboration as JLMP Phase III rolls out.
