Intersociety Sounds Alarm Over Deadly Attacks In Kwara, Taraba, Alleges State Failure
Grief is fast giving way to outrage as communities count their dead and ask why protection never arrives in time.
The International Society for Civil Liberties and Rule of Law (Intersociety) has condemned recent killings of Muslims and Christians in Kwara and Taraba states, warning that the violence reflects deep failures, and alleged complicity, among state actors.
In a statement issued on 6 February 2026, the group said investigations and information from Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) leaders in southern Katsina and Kwara indicate that many of the victims were non-violent Muslims, alongside Christians targeted in the attacks.
Intersociety alleged that the victims were killed by jihadist groups, reportedly aided or enabled by collaborators, after resisting radical indoctrination and attempts at enslavement.
The organisation said indigenous Christian populations are spread across parts of Katsina, Gombe, Borno, Kebbi, Bauchi, Kaduna and Niger states, making multiple communities vulnerable.
Citing earlier incidents, the group recalled attacks in Kasuwan-Daji near Papiri in Agwara LGA of Niger State on 28 December 2025 and 3 January 2026, where over 50 civilians were reportedly killed, with local sources confirming that most victims were Christians, alongside Muslims.
It also accused authorities and sections of the media of downplaying violence, including the alleged killing of at least 70 defenceless Christians since 1 February 2026 in Chanchanji communities of Taraba State, where a pastor was reportedly killed, churches destroyed, homes burnt and thousands displaced.
Intersociety said the pattern of attacks in Kwara, Katsina and Taraba exposes persistent failures by successive governments since 2015 to protect lives and hold perpetrators accountable, urging urgent action to end impunity and restore security to affected communities.
