UNODC Hails Nigeria Police Cybercrime Centre As Continental Force Against Online Crime

When cybercriminals strike, trust in digital systems is often the first casualty. But Nigeria’s cybercrime war room is steadily restoring that confidence, one arrest, recovery, and reform at a time.

The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) has commended the Nigeria Police Force National Cybercrime Centre (NPF-NCCC) as a highly functional and impactful unit in the fight against cybercrime, according to its newly released 2025 Annual Report on Cybercrime in Nigeria.

The report spotlighted the Centre’s growing operational muscle, citing the recent arrest of 93 Chinese nationals and other Asian suspects involved in large-scale cyber-enabled crimes. This operation significantly raised the unit’s profile in cyberspace enforcement.

UNODC noted that the NPF-NCCC recorded major breakthroughs in financial restitution, recovering and returning illicit proceeds to victims in 2024 alone.

These include ₦8.82 billion, 115,237.91 USDT in cryptocurrency, and $84,000. The Centre also dismantled 685 devices linked to cybercrime networks.

The commendation follows another international nod, with the Centre recently named the best cybercrime unit in Africa by INTERPOL’s Cybercrime Directorate in Singapore, outperforming counterparts from 54 countries.

The unit was also praised for upgrading its public complaint system into a more accessible e-reporting platform.

While presenting copies of the report to the Director of the NPF-NCCC, UNODC reaffirmed its commitment to supporting the unit through funding, specialised training, and advanced technological tools.

Reacting, the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, applauded UNODC’s sustained collaboration and reiterated the Nigeria Police Force’s resolve to guarantee a safer digital space for citizens.
