Japan, UNESCO Step Up Support To Boost Flood Resilience In Nigeria
As climate-driven floods continue to threaten lives, livelihoods and critical infrastructure across Nigeria, new international partnerships are becoming vital to building long-term resilience.
At the UN House in Abuja on Thursday, Japan and UNESCO formalised a partnership aimed at strengthening flood preparedness and resilience in Nigeria, with a special focus on flood-prone Niger State.
The project will enhance early preparedness through improved coordination among stakeholders, better use of climate and hydrological data, and targeted capacity building for institutions and communities.
The goal is to reduce disaster risks, protect livelihoods and safeguard key infrastructure.
Japan’s Ambassador to Nigeria, Suzuki Hideo, reaffirmed his country’s commitment to supporting Nigeria’s resilience efforts, stressing the importance of proactive measures in the face of increasing climate impacts.
UNESCO’s Ambassador Hajo Sani expressed appreciation to the Government of Japan for its continued support, calling for collective action among partners to build a safer and more sustainable future for vulnerable communities.
The initiative is expected to strengthen Nigeria’s disaster risk management framework and improve community-level readiness, particularly in areas most exposed to seasonal flooding.
