Imo@50: State To Honour 50 Icons As Golden Jubilee Celebrations Begin

As Imo State prepares to mark a historic milestone, the government has unveiled plans to celebrate five decades of statehood by recognising citizens and friends whose contributions have helped shape its journey.

The Imo State Government has announced that 50 distinguished persons, both living and posthumous, will be honoured as part of activities marking the state’s golden jubilee.

The Commissioner for Information, Public Orientation and Strategy, Declan Emelumba, said the recipients would be officially announced on Wednesday, 4 February, with the awards to be presented at the grand finale on Saturday, 7 February 2026.

The week-long celebrations will kick off on Sunday, 1 February, with an interdenominational thanksgiving service at the Dan Anyiam Stadium, Owerri, alongside the launch of an online Golden Jubilee Quiz designed to encourage broad public participation.

Other key highlights include a Cultural and Stars Night featuring Nollywood comedians, a media parley with the governor, zonal football finals, and the ground-breaking ceremony for the Imo Hall of Fame and Archives.

The celebrations will culminate with the honours ceremony and the unveiling of a commemorative book titled Imo@50: The Full Story.

The government said 14 sub-committees have been set up to ensure a smooth celebration, covering areas such as security, media, health, protocol, awards and mobilisation.

With Imo@50, the state is not only looking back at its journey so far, but also spotlighting those who have played key roles in its growth, while setting the tone for the next chapter.
