Okafor Lifts Akwaeze With Scholarships, Free Healthcare In 20-Year Philanthropic Drive
In communities where access to education and healthcare often defines the future, strategic giving can become a powerful tool for transformation.
In Akwaeze, Anaocha Local Government Area of Anambra State, that transformation is being quietly driven by philanthropy with purpose.
Billionaire businessman and philanthropist, Chief Ikenna Okafor, has awarded scholarships and provided free healthcare services to residents of the community under the Idi Ezeani Nzekwuabuo Foundation, established in memory of his late father, Chief Paulinus Okafor.
The annual outreach benefited over 200 students across primary, secondary and tertiary levels.
Forty-one primary pupils received ₦40,000 each, 57 secondary school students got ₦80,000 each, while more than 100 students in universities and seminaries were awarded scholarships ranging from ₦400,000 to ₦1 million.
Beyond education, the foundation extended support to widows, widowers and persons with special needs, including the blind and sickle-cell carriers.
Pregnant women and other sick residents also received free medical care, reinforcing the foundation’s holistic approach to community development.
The event, which began with a Catholic Mass, featured testimonies from past beneficiaries who have successfully completed their education.
Speaking at the occasion, the Foundation’s Secretary, Rev. Fr. Alphonsus Ezeoke, noted that the 20-year-old initiative has continued to grow in impact, describing it as a legacy of compassion that Akwaeze will not forget.
Chief Okafor said the programme was designed to sustain his father’s legacy and empower the community through education, healthcare and agriculture. “Our goal is to liberate our people from illiteracy and hardship.
With access to education, healthcare and food security, the community can overcome its struggles,” he said.
