Nigeria Hails Haiti’s Enduring Legacy Of Black Freedom At 221st Independence Day

More than two centuries after it rewrote world history, Haiti’s independence still resonates as a powerful symbol of Black resilience and self-determination—and Nigeria has joined the global community in honouring that legacy.

The Federal Government of Nigeria has congratulated the Republic of Haiti on the celebration of its 221st Independence Anniversary, describing the milestone as a reminder of Haiti’s pioneering role in the global struggle for freedom and dignity.

In a press release issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Abuja, and signed by its spokesperson, Kimiebi Imomotimi Ebienfa, Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, conveyed Ambassador Yusuf Maitama Tuggar’s, warm congratulations to his Haitian counterpart, Jean-Victor Harvel Jean-Baptiste, as well as the Government and people of Haiti.

Nigeria noted that Haiti, as the first Black republic to attain independence, occupies a unique place in world history and continues to inspire Africa and the wider African diaspora in the pursuit of liberty, justice and equality.

The statement reaffirmed Nigeria’s solidarity with Haiti as it works towards peace, stability and sustainable development, stressing the importance of unity, resilience and inclusive governance in overcoming contemporary challenges.

Highlighting the shared historical bonds and values between both nations, Nigeria expressed its commitment to strengthening bilateral relations through diplomacy, cultural exchange and cooperation within multilateral platforms such as the United Nations.

Nigeria also wishes Haiti enduring peace, economic recovery and collective prosperity as the nation marks another year of independence.
