Christmas Carnival Turns Deadly As Fireworks Explosion Kills Two In Anambra

Festive celebrations in Anambra State were shattered by tragedy when what should have been a moment of colour and excitement erupted into chaos and grief.

At least two people have been confirmed dead, while several others sustained injuries following a fireworks explosion at a Christmas carnival in Umuchu, Aguata Local Government Area.

The incident occurred on Sunday, December 28, at the peak of the event, when a high-intensity firework, locally known as a “knockout,” exploded close to the main stage.

Eyewitnesses said the blast triggered panic as revellers scrambled for safety.

One victim, identified simply as Ugochi, reportedly died on the spot, while another was rushed to the hospital but later succumbed to injuries.

The explosion was described as “bomb-like”, causing people closest to the stage to collapse instantly.

Children were among those injured, with several sustaining burns to their faces and bodies.

A teenage girl, believed to be about 14 years old, reportedly suffered severe injuries to her neck.

Disturbing videos shared online showed thick smoke, confusion and injured victims being hurried away for treatment.

A family member confirmed Ugochi’s death, noting that she had returned home for the Christmas holidays and was dancing at the carnival when disaster struck.

Sources disclosed that the fireworks were stored in cartons and designed to release multiple explosive rounds, thereby, worsening the impact.

As of the time of filing this report, the Anambra State Police Command had yet to issue an official statement.
