The Power Of Creativity: How Nigerians Are Turning Creativity into Opportunity
What begins as a 60-second video can sometimes open a door to the world.
This insight came alive in Abuja as the United States Mission in Nigeria honoured five young creatives at the Made in America, Loved in Nigeria video contest awards, celebrating how American products, ideas and technologies are shaping everyday Nigerian life.
The event, held at Silverbird Galleria, revealed a deeper story behind the applause.
With over 100 American companies currently operating in Nigeria, officials said the contest reflects a growing economic and creative partnership built on trade, innovation and shared ambition.
Speaking on behalf of the US Ambassador in Nigeria, Richard Mills Jr, the Country Public Diplomacy Counsellor, Lee McManis, described the initiative as more than a branding exercise.
It was, according to him, a reflection of a relationship anchored on commerce, mutual respect and people-to-people connection.
That relationship is already backed by policy as McManis pointed to the five-year Commercial and Investment Partnership Agreement between the United States and Nigeria, covering agriculture, the digital economy and infrastructure, an accord Nigeria shares with only four other African countries.
The contest itself drew entries from across the country, many showing how American technologies empower Nigerian creatives, open access to global audiences and support local businesses.
Award-winning filmmaker Dimbo Atiya said the initiative also responds to a changing creative landscape, where digital and vertical storytelling are fast becoming the global standard.
For the Lagos-based grand prize winner, Rasheedat Fagbenle, the moment was proof that consistency and quality still matter.
The Abuja-based third-place winner, Janefrances Ugwu, though she has deviated from her course of study, is not regretting her choice.
They advised other content creators to never hold back on their content, no matter how small, as they never know when their work will reach the right people.
From skits to strategy, the evening demonstrated that Nigeria’s creative energy, when matched with global partnerships, can travel far beyond the screen.
