Egbetokun Opens Police Medical Conference, Sets New Vision For Officer Wellness

As policing grows increasingly complex, Nigeria’s frontline officers are confronting not only external threats but rising internal pressures, making healthcare a pivotal pillar of national security.

The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olukayode Adeolu Egbetokun, has declared open the Conference of Heads of Police Healthcare Facilities, with a strong message that the future of policing in Nigeria depends heavily on the well-being of officers who daily place their lives on the line.

Speaking on Wednesday at the gathering themed “Transforming Policing in Nigeria: The Evolving Role of the Directorate of Force Medical Services,” the IGP said modern policing demands resilience, physical, emotional, and psychological, and must therefore prioritise the welfare of officers, their families, and persons in lawful custody.

Egbetokun highlighted the evolution of the Nigeria Police Force Medical Services, established in August 1975 in Lagos with a simple goal: to provide structured medical support for personnel.

Fifty years later, in August 2025, the department was elevated to a full Directorate, a move he described as strategic, not symbolic.

Today, he noted, the Police Medical Directorate operates 64 healthcare facilities nationwide, with its flagship hospitals, Police Hospital Falomo in Lagos and Police Hospital Akure in Ondo, delivering specialised care and training to interns and house officers.

The IGP challenged senior health administrators to think beyond routine care and embrace a future built on digital health integration, trauma and mental health support, emergency coordination, accreditation standards and sustainable staffing.

Egbetokun praised the often unseen but vital work of police medical personnel, stressing that a strong healthcare system directly impacts morale, readiness, retention, and operational success.

He urged participants to ensure the conference becomes a catalyst for measurable reforms that strengthen the health architecture of the Force.

With that, he formally declared the conference open, calling for clarity, purpose, and actionable outcomes.
