IGP Egbetokun Declares Zero Tolerance For Violence Ahead Of Anambra Governorship Election

With barely days to the Anambra governorship election, the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, has issued a stern warning to political actors, criminal groups, and unauthorised security outfits, declaring that “the peace of Anambra is non-negotiable.”

Speaking at the signing of the Peace Accord in Awka on Monday, Egbetokun reaffirmed the Nigeria Police Force’s readiness to guarantee a peaceful, credible, and law-abiding election on 8th November 2025.

He assured citizens that the Force, working alongside sister agencies, had developed an intelligence-driven, multi-layered security architecture covering all 21 local government areas and over 4,600 polling units in the State.

The IGP stressed that the Police remain apolitical, loyal only to the Constitution and the Nigerian electorate, warning that any attempt to undermine public peace, manipulate the process, or intimidate voters would be met with “swift, lawful, and proportionate force.”

In a strong message to non-state actors, Egbetokun announced the total proscription of all unauthorised security groups, including the so-called Ebube Agu and other vigilante formations, during the election period.

He particularly warned members of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and its armed wing, Eastern Security Network (ESN), against any plan to disrupt the polls, saying law enforcement agencies are fully prepared to respond decisively.

Egbetokun also outlined the Force’s Zero-Tolerance Enforcement Protocol, targeting offences such as vote-buying, ballot snatching, thuggery, and cyber misinformation.

He said offenders would be swiftly arrested and prosecuted through already activated Electoral Offences Desks across the State.

Calling for restraint and statesmanship, the IGP urged political leaders to campaign with honour and hold their supporters accountable, while reminding Anambra voters that the Police stand as “the Shield of the Constitution.”

“On November 8, exercise your right to vote freely and fearlessly,” he said. “We shall protect your lives, your votes, and your voices.”
